Nestled among the trees at the foot of Great North Mountain in the Shenandoah Valley rests the serene community of Orkney Springs. Since the days when the Orkney Springs Hotel was host to hundreds of guests, Orkney Springs has been a place to get away. Since the 1920s, it has also been home to a respite of a different sort. Shrine Mont, a conference center of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia is a place where people are more important than things, where prayer and reflection, rest and relaxation are more important than appointments and tasks. It's a place where people give thanks to God for creation. Summer campers stay in cabins on the mountain overlooking Shrine Mont, at Bear Wallow Camp below Virginia House, and at Camp Woodward on the hillside above Virginia House.

The Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration
The Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration, the Diocese of Virginia's open- air cathedral, was consecrated in 1925. The stones for the cathedral were gathered one by one from the surrounding hills and mountains.

Orkney Springs Hotel
The Orkney Springs Hotel is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The two-story 50-room Maryland House was built in 1850 and the main parts of the hotel, the Virginia and Pennsylvania Houses, were built in 1873.
